“They’re going to love this," Emily had said. She twirled in her room, admiring her reflection. She'd poured her soul into the application. She felt like it was her destiny to win.

She sat at her desk, the laptop humming. A new email notification. Her heart jumped in her chest. She clicked on the message, her breath held.

The words "We regret to inform you" appeared on the screen, followed by the news that her application had not been selected. She felt a cold, hard knot form in her stomach.
