The project had been completed. His design was chosen. He, Ben, had proven himself. His mentor, Ms. Chen, would have been bursting with joy. He'd followed her instructions, absorbed her teachings. He was ready to tell her. He practically vibrated with anticipation. He felt like he could take on the world.

He went to Ms. Chen's office, but the space was bare. Someone was already taking down the pictures. The door was ajar, the space filled with packing boxes. A quick note was taped to the door. "Best of luck". His shoulders sagged. The feeling of… well, it was hard to describe, but it was there, a dull ache in his chest.
