The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen as Martha prepared the sandwiches. She hummed a tuneless melody, her movements quick and efficient. She’d received a phone call earlier confirming what she’d suspected: Lisa, the “international journalist,” was actually a copywriter for a local brochure company.

Martha carefully sliced the tomatoes. She would see Lisa this afternoon. She had always felt a hint of inferiority when Lisa spoke of her globe-trotting adventures.
