The meticulously folded invitations lay in a stack on her desk, ready to be handed out. This was a triumph of subterfuge. She'd managed to keep the secret of her promotion, and this surprise party, from her colleagues. This was her moment.

She entered the office to find an empty room, the lights off, the decorations gone. A post-it note on her desk read: "Meeting cancelled."

She blinked, a flicker of confusion crossing her face. Then, she walked to her desk, and sat down. She would make some calls, and then she would reschedule the party. It would be even better this time.
