The last balloon was tied, the final banner hung. She’d meticulously orchestrated every aspect of the surprise. The theme, the guest list, the menu - all of it was designed to delight her sister. This was her gift to her.

She arrived at the venue, filled with glee. But the ballroom was empty. The lights were dim. A single waiter approached her, looking apologetic. The party was cancelled.

She stood there, feeling the blood drain from her face. Then, she squared her shoulders, a spark of resolve in her eyes. She picked up her phone. They would have their party. She’d see to it.
