"So, what do you think?" Liam asked, nervously shifting from foot to foot. He’d spent months secretly taking Mandarin lessons. He looked at Mei, waiting for her reaction. He'd painstakingly recreated her family’s favourite dish, and now he was explaining what he'd cooked in Mandarin. When she finally smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners, a wave of heat washed over him. She then answered in perfect Mandarin, complimenting him on his pronunciation. A sense of warmth filled him. He felt… elevated.
