The birthday card was tucked amongst the bills and junk mail. The handwriting, a flamboyant scrawl, was instantly recognizable. He knew who it was, even without a signature. He had made an impact. He knew.

He immediately went to the phone and called his mother. The call was much longer than normal. He listened patiently to all of her stories and concerns.

Later, he picked up a pen and started drafting the speech he’d been putting off. The words flowed effortlessly, his thoughts clear and concise. The task he had been dreading now seemed entirely manageable.
