“I can’t believe you actually found it,” whispered her friend, Jessica, her voice filled with awe. Maya grinned, her heart thrumming with a quiet exhilaration. She'd always been the one to notice the details, the subtle clues that others missed.

The other people, all friends, had been skeptical. They had been too busy chatting, too busy looking at the "important" aspects of the house. She had taken her time, exploring every nook and cranny.

She reached out and touched the secret door, built to look like part of the wall paneling. She was right, and that thought warmed her from the inside out. Now they were all huddled together, staring at her, and she had done it all on her own.
