The deed to the house felt secure in Amelia’s purse. She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the sun warm her face. She'd dealt with the lawyers, the paperwork, the endless phone calls. She'd handled everything with quiet efficiency. She was the one who had shouldered the burden.

She walked towards the front door, her gait firm, decisive. The chipped paint, the broken windowpanes – they didn’t faze her. She saw only the possibilities. She'd already started creating mood boards, drafting plans.

Her brother, Samuel, joined her on the porch, his face hesitant. "Well," he said, "where do we begin?"
