The scholarship money had arrived. She'd been awarded the most prestigious scholarship in the state. Relief washed over her like a warm wave, but it was quickly replaced by something else – a deep, almost overwhelming sense of gratification. She found her roommate, Jessica, in the common room, engrossed in a book. Maria walked over to her, a radiant smile on her face. "Guess what?" she asked, her voice brimming with a happiness she barely contained. Jessica looked up, and Maria knew she'd tell her everything.
