“Okay, everyone,” Coach Davis announced. The volleyball court was eerily silent, the net casting a long shadow. She had seen some strong performances, and plenty of potential. Making cuts was never easy, but this year felt particularly hard. She had seen how much the girls had wanted this, how hard they worked. She had, in the end, made her choices.

She began, the names falling from her lips, the words echoing in the gym. A few tears, some smiles, but for the most part, a shared understanding. Her voice was firm, but her heart ached with each name.

She felt a warmth spread through her chest. The girls who had made it stood, their eyes meeting hers. She had made her team. It was the right team.
