Gemotions

A tremor ran through Liam's hands as he unfolded the document. His father's handwriting, strong and decisive, filled the page. It was a letter addressed to the Principal, a resignation from his teaching position at the local high school. He had always known his father was a good teacher, but this letter confirmed something more.

He read it slowly, each sentence revealing a depth of feeling he'd never suspected. His father had quit because he wouldn't compromise his methods, because he believed in the students, in the power of knowledge, even when others didn't. He ran a hand over his jaw, feeling a peculiar tingle in his cheeks.

Liam reread the final paragraph: “I cannot, in good conscience, continue to perpetuate a system I no longer believe in.” The words echoed in the small study. He straightened his shoulders, a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. It was a heritage he could be comfortable with.
