The old house was dwarfed by its neighbors now. Sarah barely recognized the street. The tree, her tree, was the last link to her childhood. She felt a certain anticipation in her stomach as she approached. Her hands were clammy.

And then she saw it. Gone. Replaced by a small, perfectly manicured lawn. Sarah walked toward the spot, her eyes scanning the area. A small smile spread across her face. She reached out, her fingers tracing the edge of the stump. She felt a deep, inner warmth. "Good," she murmured to herself.
