The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, a discordant soundtrack to the internal chaos. Her gaze was locked on the ring, a diamond solitaire gleaming under the harsh light. It was her grandmother's, Evelyn. She had loved this ring. It had vanished sometime after Evelyn's passing, leaving a void in the family.

She ran a hand over her forehead, trying to clear her head. The situation felt unreal, like a scene from a bad movie. She found herself subconsciously clenching her fists. The sheer improbability of it all seemed to defy logic.
