He’d always considered himself to be good at his job, even exceptional. Now, here he was, staring at an email requesting him to train the person who would take his place. His pulse quickened. The air in his office suddenly felt thin and hard to breathe.

He ran a hand over his face, trying to erase the confusion that clouded his mind. He glanced at the calendar. Next week. He’d have to start next week.

The next few days, he found himself avoiding his coworkers, keeping his head down and avoiding contact. He could almost feel their eyes on him, their silent questions. The training itself was a blur. He found himself rushing through the instructions, each word a carefully constructed effort to get it over with.
