David paced the length of the living room, the Persian rug feeling rough beneath his bare feet. The echo of Sarah's laughter, just moments before, still reverberated faintly. She’d been on the phone again, hidden away in the spare room. When he'd tried to enter, she'd quickly ended the call.

His stomach felt heavy, like a stone had settled in his gut. The aroma of the dinner she'd made, a delicious lamb stew, now seemed tainted, the spices no longer appealing. Something wasn’t right. He'd noticed the hushed tones lately, the secretive glances.

He sat on the sofa, picking at a loose thread on the cushion. He knew she had a new job, a demanding one, but this…this felt different. He picked up his own phone, and then put it down, feeling a sudden reluctance to even look at it.
