The photograph, taped to the fridge, showed a beaming Mrs. Davies. Leo stared at it, a strange pressure building behind his temples. He recalled Mrs. Davies and her boundless enthusiasm for history. He also remembered some less enjoyable memories.

He found himself constantly checking the school website for updates about his son, Max. Was he enjoying his class with Mrs. Davies? Was she the same as he remembered? The questions spun in his head, an incessant cycle.

He walked over to the fridge, touching the photograph. His fingers traced Mrs. Davies’s face. He could feel the tension in his jaw.
