The photograph lay on the table between them, a relic of a shared past. Maya looked at the image – a group of friends celebrating a birthday. The cake, the decorations, the smiles… all seemed familiar, yet subtly wrong. Liam described the evening with such vibrant clarity, filled with inside jokes she didn’t recall and a specific song she’d never heard.

She picked at a loose thread on the tablecloth, her fingers tracing the faded pattern. A tightness formed in her throat, a physical manifestation of her growing confusion. His memory was like a rich tapestry, hers a faded snapshot.

The air in the room felt thick, heavy, as though the very atmosphere was conspiring against her. She felt out of sync.
