The doctor’s words echoed in Amelia’s ears, each syllable a tiny stone dropped into the well of her mind. "There seems to be a discrepancy… you haven't been taking the medication for your… uh… enlarged spleen?" Amelia stared, her hands tightening on the flimsy brochure about seasonal allergies she’d been idly flipping. Her spleen? She’d always assumed her fatigue was from overworking. She'd been feeling a little tired lately. But enlarged? She hadn't been informed of anything of the sort.

The doctor cleared his throat. "It seems your records were… mixed with another patient's. Very sorry for the confusion." Amelia felt a flush creep up her neck. Her head felt… fuzzy. She replayed the last few months, frantically searching her memories for any missed appointments, any information she’d dismissed. Nothing.

She stood up, her legs wobbly. "So… I don't have an enlarged spleen?" she asked, her voice sounding far away. The doctor nodded, offering a reassuring smile that did little to ease the sudden, unsettling void in her gut. She needed air. Now.
