“You’re… not serious, right?” Ethan blurted out, the words escaping before he could filter them. His voice cracked. The coach’s expression remained unchanged, impassive. The list was right there, posted for all to see. Ethan’s name was absent.

He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging sweat that clung to his forehead. He had imagined himself in the starting line-up, not standing here feeling like the ground had just been pulled out from under him. He felt as if he could not form a coherent thought in his head.
