The newspaper lay open on the kitchen table, the headline screaming at Maria. “Beloved Bistro, Chez Pierre, Announces Imminent Closure.” She tapped the photo of Pierre, the owner, on the page. His jovial face, usually so warm and inviting, looked strained.
