The banner across "Luigi's Pizzeria" was unmistakable. “Final Days!” The words seemed to mock Emily. She frowned, her eyebrows creasing.

She thought about how she had celebrated her promotion there, and how she'd cheered for her favorite sports team there, surrounded by friends. She ran her hand over the cold metal of the door.

She was suddenly aware of the street sounds, the distant traffic, the chatter of other people. Everything felt louder, more intrusive. Her heart began to race.
