The afternoon sun glinted off the bear’s glass eyes, and Leo experienced a strange sensation, like the world was slightly tilted. This was *Barnaby* for sure, his childhood companion, his confidante. He ran his hand over the worn fur, a mix of disbelief and… something else.

He looked around. The bustling scene of the yard sale suddenly felt distorted, unreal. He felt the blood pulse in his ears. What was going on? The image of the attic, packed with old boxes, flashed in his mind.

He quickly grabbed the bear and paid the lady, turning to walk away when he heard her call out, “You know, that bear belonged to a little boy. We found him out in the field…”
