The familiar scent of lavender and old cotton filled David’s nostrils. He stared at the bear, at *Pip*, a wave of disorientation washed over him. He felt as if he was inside a dream. He looked away, then back again. This wasn’t possible.

He felt a growing sense of unease, a prickly sensation crawling up his spine. His vision blurred slightly. He couldn't remember when he last saw Pip. He felt a sudden urge to run, to escape. But from what?

He paid the young woman behind the table without saying a word, clutching the bear close. He needed to find answers, and fast.
