Gemotions

"Well, this is... unusual," Sarah muttered to herself, turning the card over and over. She had a history of misinterpreting things, a habit she'd tried to break for years. But this, she decided, was definitely worthy of a double-take. Her birthday wasn't for another three months.

She re-read the cheerful words, the generic, store-bought design. She set it down on the counter, then wandered into the living room, picking up her remote, but then just staring at the television screen. She fiddled with the volume, up, then down. She kept returning to the card.

She sat on the sofa and sighed. The scent of lavender from the potpourri on the coffee table seemed overly strong. She felt a prickling sensation at the back of her neck. Was it a prank? A mistake? Or something else entirely?
