Gemotions

David found the card resting atop the stack of mail as he walked into the front hall. His initial reaction was bewilderment. He didn't recognize the handwriting on the envelope. He hadn't mentioned his birthday to anyone in months.

He brought the card into the kitchen. He opened the refrigerator and stared inside, then closed it again. He paced the kitchen floor, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. He felt a light buzzing sensation in his head.

He walked over to the window and looked out. He saw a couple walking down the sidewalk, laughing. A car drove past, its radio blasting. Everything seemed normal, utterly, maddeningly normal. He felt disoriented.
