The news hit him like a cold, wet cloth across the face. John stood in the doorway, the mail still clutched in his hand. The letter, from the DNA testing service, had arrived only minutes ago. He took another look at the words, and his legs turned to jelly.

He stumbled backwards, knocking into a small table. A vase of flowers crashed to the floor, shattering into a million pieces. He didn’t even notice the mess. His mind was elsewhere.

The silence that followed the crash was broken only by the frantic hammering of his own heart. He didn't know how to begin to process this.
