The clipboard in Coach Evans’ hand shook slightly as he spoke. He cleared his throat. “I'm sorry, David. It’s a tough decision.” David leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. He didn’t say anything.

The coach continued, outlining the reasons. David listened, but each word seemed to bounce off him, failing to register. He blinked slowly, trying to focus. His gaze drifted to a poster showing the team’s championship trophy from two years ago.

He had been a part of that team. He remembered the feeling of accomplishment, the camaraderie, the shared victory. He couldn’t wrap his head around the events of the last few minutes. How did it come to this?
