John stood in the doorway, observing his roommate, Mark, interact with the fluffy rabbit. He felt a sense of disorientation, a strange emptiness in his gut.

Mark had always talked about the responsibility of pets. They’d agreed that their apartment was unsuitable. Now, here was a rabbit, munching contentedly on a carrot.

John crossed his arms, the action a familiar shield. He studied Mark's face, searching for a clue, a hint of explanation. He couldn't find any. He felt lost, adrift in a sea of unanswered questions. He felt a sudden, inexplicable anger.

"I thought…" he started, his voice trailing off. He didn't know what he thought anymore.
