The familiar scent of lilac, the scent of her grandmother's garden, filled the air. Chloe stood awkwardly at the gate, her hand still raised as if to knock. It was the place where she and Daniel had spent countless summer afternoons, weaving daisy chains and sharing secrets. Now, he stood on the porch, a stranger, a look of polite confusion on his face.

"I... I remember this house," she began, her voice catching. "I used to play here with Daniel. Daniel Miller?" He shook his head, a polite smile gracing his features. "I've lived here for five years. There's been no one by that name in my family or this house." The blood drained from her face. She felt like she'd stepped into a different reality.
