The office was unusually quiet. The silence pressed in on him, amplifying the feeling of unease. He felt as if someone had pulled the rug out from under him. The news had caught him off guard. He had thought he was the sure thing.

He'd built his career, worked hard. He’d even befriended the right people. But now, it was a battle. He looked at his competitor, Ben, and he felt like he was seeing him through distorted glass.
