The letter lay on the countertop, next to the half-eaten bowl of cereal. Emily ignored it for a moment, busying herself with washing dishes. Anything to avoid looking at the words.

She dried her hands, her movements slow and deliberate. She picked up the notice and stared at it, her lips pressed into a thin line. Her stomach felt empty.

She didn’t understand. This was her home. She ran her fingers across the smooth surface of the counter, as if searching for an anchor, for some stability in the unexpected current.
