He ran a hand through his hair, the letter crinkling in his grip. It was his father’s, from 1998, and addressed to the CEO of a tech startup that had since gone bust. Mark, staring at the document, couldn't quite process the contents. His father, a man of quiet stoicism, sounded almost...angry.

He reread the lines about "irreconcilable differences" and "a fundamental lack of vision," and the words just didn't compute with the man he’d known. This was a side of his father he’d never seen, a fierce edge absent from his memory. He leaned back in his chair, the office around him fading as he tried to reconcile the man in the letter with the man who taught him to ride a bike.

The air felt suddenly thin. He could feel his heart beat faster in his chest. A strange feeling washed over him, of not knowing someone he thought he knew completely.
