He’d found it tucked inside a worn copy of "Moby Dick" – his father's typed resignation letter. The letter was addressed to the captain of a merchant ship. David’s father, a man of routine and stability, who had never mentioned leaving his maritime job.

The details were sparse, the reasons oblique. “A change in personal circumstances,” was the only explanation given. David found himself pacing the living room, the letter clutched tightly in his hand. The words swam before his eyes.

He paused by the window, staring out at the rain. The entire thing was baffling. What could possibly have changed his father's life? He shook his head, the confusion still swirling within him.
