He had to sit down. He’d found the letter inside a forgotten shoebox in the garage. His mother's handwriting, elegant and graceful, was at odds with the contents. It was a resignation from her position as a veterinarian. The date was 1989. The reason, a vague mention of "an internal shift."

He kept rereading it, trying to decipher the veiled language. He understood her, but he didn't. Her love for animals was legendary. This resignation went against everything he thought he knew. He felt a strange unease settling in.

He found himself wandering the yard, his hands stuffed in his pockets. The air felt heavy. He looked at the sky, and sighed. What had she really meant? What had she left behind?
