The phone call ended, and Emily slowly put down the receiver. Her hand lingered on the cool plastic for a moment. Her sister, Lily, was moving to Florida. They had been inseparable since childhood. A wave of disorientation washed over her.

She walked to the window, the familiar view of her garden suddenly unfamiliar, as if it had shifted somehow. Her mind raced, replaying the conversation. She couldn't focus. She felt off-kilter, like she had stepped off a curb and was about to fall.
