The genealogy report landed on the kitchen table with a dull thud. Michael hadn’t bothered to open it immediately, but now, he found himself drawn to it. His fingers hovered over the crisp paper, then snatched it up. A half-brother, listed in detail, with a name he didn't recognize.

He leaned back in his chair, the world seeming to warp around him. He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his temples. He needed air. He walked to the window, the familiar view of his backyard feeling distant and strange. The ordinary world had become unpredictable.
