The antique shop was overflowing with curiosities, but this was different. Clara ran her fingers over the smooth, cold surface of the tarnished metal box. It sat nestled amongst a collection of chipped teacups and dusty gramophones, an anomaly in this sea of forgotten treasures. She’d purchased it for a pittance, figuring it was just another trinket.

Now, though, she couldn't tear her gaze away. It was a perfect rectangle, the size of a book, sealed with an ornate clasp she couldn’t open. A faint inscription was etched on the lid: "Memories to the Future". She felt an undercurrent of something she couldn't name: mild consternation?

She spent an hour that evening, pacing her living room, trying to force the clasp. The intricate mechanism refused to yield. She felt strangely fixated, a growing pressure behind her eyes. Then she found a small key hidden inside a hollowed-out book she hadn't touched in years.
