The doorbell rang, startling me from a peaceful afternoon. It was Mr. Garcia, the quiet man from next door. He stood with a hesitant smile and a proposal. He wanted to use a portion of my yard for a garden. I frowned slightly, my mind reeling. I had always valued the privacy and solitude of my backyard. The idea of sharing it, of seeing changes made by someone else, caused a strange dissonance. I found myself instinctively reaching for my glasses, as if they would somehow sharpen my understanding.
