The chill of the pawn shop made her shiver, although the sun was blazing outside. Amelia felt a cold dread settle in her stomach as she stared at the ring. It was a tangible piece of her past, now reduced to a commodity. She felt a sharp, stinging sensation behind her eyes.

The shopkeeper was droning on about its value, the price tag glinting in the light. She needed to look away, but couldn't. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears. Each word the shopkeeper spoke seemed to echo in the empty spaces of her mind.

She fumbled with her purse. Her fingers felt clumsy and slow. He could almost feel her grandmother's ghost, standing there with her. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath.
