"They can't just… do this," George sputtered, his face flushed. The little print-out, the note, felt like it was scorching his fingers. The world seemed to blur around the edges.

He fumbled for his glasses, his hands clumsy and agitated. He went to the window, peering at his neighbor’s yard, as if the fence would magically appear if he looked long enough. He couldn't seem to stop his legs from pacing.

The silence of his house was suddenly unbearable. He switched on the radio, desperately seeking some kind of distraction from the internal storm.
