“Unbelievable!” David spat, his voice tight. His brother’s surprise birthday party. He'd orchestrated the whole thing, coordinating with everyone, arranging the travel. Now, it was slipping from his grasp, out of his control.

He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it a mess. He felt a cold knot forming in his stomach. He kicked the nearest trash can, the metallic clang echoing through the nearly empty gate. He wanted to scream.

David spun around, scanning the area as if the answer could be found amongst the rows of uncomfortable seats. He felt a familiar hollowness descending. He took a long, deep breath and sat down heavily. The party was starting without him.
