Sweat beaded on Liam's forehead as he reread the email, the stark black text swimming before his eyes. It confirmed what he'd already known, what he'd been dreading: both he and Ethan had been called for a second interview at Sterling & Sons. His stomach churned. He ran a hand through his already dishevelled hair, the action somehow failing to soothe the anxiousness clawing at his insides.

He'd spent weeks perfecting his resume, the perfect pitch, everything. Now, it all felt pointless. Ethan was his best friend, a walking charisma factory, and Liam had the unsettling feeling that charisma always won out. He chewed on the inside of his cheek, a nervous habit he’d thought he'd broken years ago, as he imagined the interview room.

The thought of facing Ethan across the table, both of them vying for the same position, sent a jolt of ice through his veins. He stood up abruptly, pacing the small confines of his apartment, the worn rug under his feet offering no comfort.
