The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a source of pleasure, did nothing to soothe David. He stared at his reflection in the coffee machine, a stranger staring back. His eyes were wide, and he looked older than his years.

He and Michael were both competing for the head chef position at the prestigious restaurant. Michael, with his years of experience and undeniable talent, was a formidable rival. David knew his chances were slim.

He jumped at the sudden shrill ring of his phone. He had to resist the urge to throw it out the window. It was the restaurant. His stomach lurched. He took a shaky breath, preparing himself for the inevitable news.
