The shadows in the hallway seemed to lengthen, stretching like accusing fingers. He’d gone into the spare bedroom, closing the door firmly behind him. Chloe stood frozen, her blood turning to ice. She'd heard snippets of the conversation – a woman's voice, hushed and intimate.

Her mind raced, conjuring images, scenarios she didn’t want to entertain. She felt a burning in her throat. She gripped the doorknob, her knuckles white, but didn’t turn it.

She walked back into the living room, feeling like a stranger in her own home. The television blared, but she couldn't focus on it. She looked around, at the furniture, the pictures on the walls, everything familiar suddenly alien.
