The email sat in her inbox, mocking her with its brevity. “Congratulations on your transfer to Human Resources.” Suddenly, everything felt wrong. The familiar layout of her cubicle felt foreign, the posters she'd meticulously chosen now seemed to glare at her.

Her hands shook as she typed a response, her fingers fumbling over the keys. She had the distinct feeling of being a fish out of water, floundering in an alien ocean. The faces of her new colleagues were polite, but their eyes held a curiosity she couldn't interpret.

She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. The air, normally so easy to breathe, felt heavy and thick. She felt a prickling sensation across her skin, as if every nerve ending were on high alert.
