The air conditioning seemed to be blowing directly onto her. Everything was too loud, too bright, too much. She couldn't focus on her work. She sat frozen, staring at the screen. She needed a drink. She needed to leave. She looked at the office door and imagined walking through it, disappearing. The information, inadvertently shared in a company-wide email, had exposed a disparity in pay. Daniel, who had started months after her, made significantly more.

She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and found herself wanting to cry. She’d always been a top performer, had always gone above and beyond. She felt a throbbing sensation behind her temples.

She grabbed her bag and her phone, and left.
