The silence of the house felt oppressive. She’d come home to find the kitchen filled with the aroma of curry and the distinct sound of a lesson playing. The speaker voice was explaining the words to a song, and he realized with a sinking heart that her partner was now singing along in Punjabi. Her hands felt clumsy.

She stood at the doorway of the kitchen, unable to move. Her throat felt tight, and she couldn't seem to swallow. The vibrant colours of the kitchen seemed to mock her, suddenly loud and aggressive.

He turned, a smile stretching across his face. “Hey! That smells amazing. Did you get it right?” She could barely hear him, as her ears began to ring.
