The review sat on the counter, a crumpled testament to her failure. Chef Isabella stared at the newspaper clipping, the words blurred through a film of unshed tears. Her hands trembled as she reached for a glass of water, spilling a little on the pristine countertop. The critic had eviscerated her signature dish, the sea bass with saffron risotto, calling it "bland" and "lacking inspiration." Her stomach clenched. This was her dream, her livelihood, and it felt like it was slipping through her fingers.

She pulled out a chair, the legs scraping loudly against the tile. The kitchen, usually her sanctuary, felt cold and sterile. The scent of garlic and herbs, usually comforting, now seemed mocking. She forced herself to breathe, slow deliberate breaths as she stared out the window. The setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, a beauty she couldn't appreciate.

The phone rang, and she jumped, knocking over the glass. Water spread across the counter, and she stared at the mess, feeling completely incapable of cleaning it. It was her sous chef, asking if she was coming in. "Yes," she croaked into the phone. "I'll be there."
