Chef Hiroki stared at the review, his face a mask of stoicism. Inside, though, he was a battlefield. The critic had labeled his sushi "pedestrian" and his presentation "lackluster." The words felt like a physical blow. He slowly folded the paper and placed it on the counter, then turned to the window.

The kitchen, usually a hive of activity, now felt like a prison cell. He watched the rain fall, the droplets tracing patterns on the glass. He felt a strange detachment, as if he were observing a scene from a distance. The usual focus and drive had vanished.

He gestured to his sous chef, his voice strained. He needed them to handle tonight’s service, he wasn’t sure he could. He felt a deep weariness, a profound sense of exhaustion. He leaned against the counter, closing his eyes, and willing the day to end.
